MedRed Joins OSEHRA as Newest Corporate Member

Leader in Point of Care Decision Support Joins Open Source Community

ARLINGTON, Va. - Aug. 7, 2013 - PRLog -- Arlington, Virginia and Washington, D.C. – OSEHRA, the Open Source Electronic Health Record Agent, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing open source health information technology, and MedRed, LLC, a leader in making medical knowledge available to patients and healthcare providers at the point of care, announced today MedRed’s decision to secure OSEHRA Corporate Membership.

MedRed, a winner of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Industry Innovation Competition, recently completed trials of its Balto-enabled (http://www.medred.com/content.cfm?ID=58) TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) Toolbox software package in the VA Hunter Holmes McGuire Polytrauma Center in Richmond, Virginia.  The system eliminates the need to collect and store over 19,000 paper forms per year at that one site, dramatically streamlining data collection and storage while facilitating analysis and decision-making.

“The use of health IT to streamline clinical decision-making and documentation is a pressing challenge requiring new software tools, skill sets and organizational processes,” said Dr. Seong Ki Mun, Ph.D., Chief Executive Officer and President, OSEHRA. "We are excited to be partnering with MedRed, which is a leader in developing these approaches,” said Dr. Mun.

MedRed Chairman and CEO, Dr. William K. Smith, M.D. added, “MedRed’s mission is to save lives and to prevent suffering by making medical knowledge available at the point of care. VistA is the application of record for a large number of healthcare practitioners, both inside and outside the VA. For that reason alone, it is an incredibly important system. When VistA is empowered by the open source methodologies embodied by OSEHRA, it becomes a game changing catalyst for affordable, effective healthcare delivery. MedRed is proud and excited to be a participant in, and sponsor of, that kind of change.”

The OSEHRA Corporate Forum includes InterSystems, Inc., DSS (Document Storage Systems), Inc., Medsphere Systems Corporation, Northrop Grumman Corporation, AEGIS.net, Inc., The MITRE Corporation, AssureRx Health, Inc., Spin Systems, Inc., the VistA Expertise Network, iCare.Com, LLC, MedicaSoft, LLC, the Oroville Hospital, the New School’s Parsons Institute for Information Mapping (PiiM), the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Indian Health Service, and MedRed, LLC.

The OSEHRA open source ecosystem is a transparent, rapid and safe way to accelerate progress in creating an ever improving, and highly functional EHR for the beneficiaries of VA healthcare, and more broadly, the nation as a whole.
