Here is what they have to say - The differences in 2D animation and 3D animation are significant. 2D animation was popular during the 19th century, but with the advancement of computer technology, 3D animation soon gained immense popularity. Nowadays, the use of 3D animation is common for creating special effects in feature films. Both 2D and 3D are forms of animation, although, the capabilities of each and the processes from creating them differ significantly. Here are some of the differences.

Creating Animation: - 3D animation is possible only on powerful computers that are capable of running high-end software applications such as 3D Studio Max or LightWave 3D. 2D animation, on the other hand, is possible on most computers, using simple applications such as Adobe Flash.

Objects: - Objects in 2D are flat, just like a painting or photograph. Whereas in 3D, objects are more like, sculptures. They will have all aspects – front, back, sides, top, and bottom. That’s why, one can view a 3D objects from any angle.

Camera: - Various software applications provide virtual camera for creating 3D animation. This virtual camera has similar features that of an actual camera. The virtual camera can also manipulate like actual movie camera, which includes zooms, pans, and tracking shots. For 2D animation, such advance technology is not required.

Realism: - Using 3D models and hyper-real textures, 3D animation can deliver amazing viewing experience that are virtually similar to real life. On the other hand, even the highest quality 2D animation will still look like hand-drawn cartoon-like appearance.

Special Effects: - For 2D, special effects such as fire, smoke, water ripples, explosions, and so on need to be hand-drawn for each frame. For 3D, these effects are created easily with the software plug-ins or filters.

Aside from these, Imaginar added, there are several other aspects that differ 2D and 3D animation. Creating 3D animation is time-consuming process and requires considerable experience and skills.
