By: Ed Ethridge Productions Part of the HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program, the 100 new vouchers combine rental assistance from HUD with case management and clinical services provided by the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs (VA). HUD-VASH is designed to help homeless veterans, many of whom are living with chronic disabling conditions, receive services that will assist them in rejoining the community. Veterans who have spouses and dependent children are also eligible to participate. “This program is part of a shared national commitment to help end veteran homelessness,” For veterans to participate in HUD-VASH, they must be homeless, eligible for VA medical care and have an identified clinical need for case management. Since 2008, the program has secured housing for more than 40,000 veterans nationwide. Based on geographic need and housing authority administrative performance, BCHA was first selected in 2009 to receive VASH vouchers. The 100 additional vouchers will be available as eligible veterans are identified and referred by the VA.
