Native-Americans folklore from early 1800s tells of the healing powers of mineral water of the Sycamore Springs. Early tribe members used airtight wigwams and poured springs water over hot rocks for sweat baths. By the early 1800s many settlers were moving westward and one of their important water stops was Sycamore Springs. John Brown, James Lane and Kansas Free Staters spent time in the area. The springs, known then as Plymouth Springs, was one of several towns organized by Lane. A fort, James Lane, was located nearby. A large 60-room wood-framed hotel building was built in response to the increasing interest in the areas mineral water and picnic areas. By 1886, Sycamore Springs had become widely known as an outstanding Midwest health resort. A five-story stone hotel containing all the latest conveniences and modern hospital facilities was soon constructed. Unfortunately, both buildings were destroyed by fire in 1916. The present hotel was rebuilt in the early 1920s. “Sycamore Springs exudes Kansas history,” said Bob Best, REALTOR® with United Country – Heart of America Real Estate & Auction in Oskaloosa, Kan. “Whether it’s the reconstructed hotel or the 105-year-old pipe organ in the historic church, this property tells tales of simpler time when folks truly understood the meaning of quality.” The resort has numerous rental cabins, primitive camping sites, as well as approximately 150 RV hookups with 20-, 30- or 50-amp service. The hotel includes a restaurant, and there are kitchens in several of the larger guest cabins. The springs flow an estimated 60,000 gallons of mineral water per day and feed into the winding Pony Creek which runs throughout the property. The historic church was relocated to the resort and houses what is believed to be one of the oldest pipe organs in Kansas. An old train depot from Morrill, Kan., was relocated to the property. Additionally, Sycamore Springs Resort has buildings available for rent for reunions, conventions, gatherings and other events. Recreational facilities include basketball and volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, a baseball field, tennis court, 18-hole miniature golf course and an indoor roller skating rink complete with original hardwood floors from 1936 and a concession stand.
