CONCORD, N.H. - June 27, 2013 - PRLog -- True to their nature of staying at the forefront of engineering, Volvo will soon be demonstrating a self parking car. It may not be before long that such a vehicle is available at Lovering Volvo of Concord (http://www.loveringconcord.com/index.htm). By activating an app right from their cellphone, a driver can leave their Volvo, order it to find a vacant parking spot, and then park itself. Sensors on the outside of the body help the Volvo to safely read the road and make its way into an empty space. When they need the vehicle again, they simply activate the app, and the car returns to their location.

"Autonomous Parking is a concept technology that relieves the driver of the time-consuming task of finding a vacant parking space. The driver just drops the vehicle off at the entrance to the car park and picks it up in the same place later," says Thomas Broberg, Senior Safety Advisor Volvo Car Group.

While some drivers may be wary of vehicles that park themselves, the prospects are looking good. Google has recently been running a self-driven car program with strong results. Since the project began several years ago, none of the computer-driven vehicles has been in an accident. This technology is expected to make its way into commercial markets soon.

Innovations like this are not only convenient, but safe. And while vehicles that park themselves still may be a few years away, Volvo vehicles are currently equipped with a wide range of active safety systems that help drivers to stay safe on the road and avoid collisions.

These systems include:

    •     Dynamic stability control with traction control

    •     Collision warning with full auto-brake and pedestrian protection

    •     Anti-lock brakes with a hydraulic brake assist

    •     Lane departure warning

    •     Driver alert control

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (http://www.iihs.org/ratings/default.aspx) also currently recognizes five different Volvo vehicles as either a 2013 Top Safety Pick or a 2013 Top Safety Pick+. This includes the C30 hatchback, the S80 sedan, and the XC90 crossover SUV.
