What is Advertising Retargeting?
The premise is that 98% of visitors leave your site without buying anything. Retargeting "tags" your visitors with a unique cookie. When the visitor leaves your site and goes to advertising platforms that are part of the 'retargeting network' your ad appears on their screen.

Through Retargeting networks you get to determine how many times each day the ad (banner) will appear on their computers. The theory is that visitors will click on your banner and convert.

Since visitors had shown an initial interest in your offer (which is why they were at your site) they are more prone to make a purchase. Or so the theory goes.

Many visitors are creeped out by this notion.

CPV versus Retargeting
Retargeting is a category name that includes technologies like Cost Per View (CPV) advertising. The problem with the CPV advertising model is that it required the buyer to download software (usually hidden in 'free' downloads of toolbars, etc.) on their computer. You may even have this software on your computer right now and not even know it.

Some predict that new computers will come with CPV software already installed and the the buyer won't have a choice (like Windows and IE).

Concerns About Retargeting
Are advertisers really getting the sales that many claim are possible from retargeting? Some critics claim that the reason everyone is hearing about Retargeting now is because affiliate networks are promoting them. That means that most of the Retargeting discussions you find will be from affiliates with a link that will earn them money from you purchasing Retargeting ads.
