Anniversary Event at Harcourt House will Feature Insight into Therapeutic Art Forms

Heart-breaking tragedy inspires artistic evolution for Harcourt House artist in residence.

EDMONTON, Alberta - June 18, 2013 - PRLog -- Edmonton, Alberta-Over the years the link between artistic exploration and emotional healing from trauma has been increasingly recognized by both the artistic and medical communities. In an effort to help others understand and explore this important relationship themselves, current Artist in Residence, Alexis Marie Chute, will open her studio to the public as part of the Kinetic Exhibition and fundraiser which coincides with the 25th anniversary of Harcourt House Gallery and Artist Run Centre in Edmonton.

Chute is a long-time professional artist, photographer, and writer who has garnered a wealth of accolades the world-over for her work. But it is her most recent art that has had the most significant impact on both her personal and artistic life. Having endured the tragic loss of a child, Chute has spent the better part of recent years using her artistic sensibilities as a way of channelling her grief, the results of which will be on display in her solo exhibition at Harcourt House at the end of her residency in the fall.

“No parent should lose a child. It was devastating; it still is. As I struggled to cope with this unimaginable grief, I realized that one of the most important tools I had was right at my fingertips. Using my art to find healing has been amazing,” says Chute, whose son Zachary died shortly after birth in 2010.

Chute also wants to help others engage with their own personal struggles, “Beyond helping me process my loss, art helped me to redefine myself, to find a way to move forward and become the artist I am today. By opening up my studio I want to give others the opportunity to see how they can embark on such a journey themselves.”

The opening reception for the Kinetic exhibition, including works by Chute, takes place June 20th, from 6-10pm at Harcourt House (10215-112 Street). Alexis Marie Chute’s studio (10211-112 Street) will house a poetry reading, woodworking demonstration, and behind-the-scenes access to her multi-media artwork that will be featured in her residency exhibition entitled, “The Quiet Rebuild.”

The entire exhibition runs from from June 13th, to July 5, 2013. For more information on Alexis and her work, visit www.alexismariechute.com and www.wantedchosenplanned.com
