Parent Led Reform calls on MO lawmakers to hit pause button on common core standards

May 12, 2013 - PRLog -- Missouri House Education Committee will be hearing a bill on Monday which Requires the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to hold public meetings in each congressional district on the Common Core State Standards, including the collection of 61 personal and private data points per each student.

“SB 210 will force DESE to finally have to talk about the cost and student data retrieval that comes with Common Core Standards,” said Gretchen Logue co-founder of Truth In American Education. “Up until now, DESE has insisted it will cost nothing and no costs have been expended for CCSS.  I find that remarkable as California has indicated it will cost that state at least 2 billion.”

MO Commissioner of Education Chris Nicastro in earlier testimony to legislators on Common Core Standards has failed to mention what the 61 points of data are that will be collected, the purposes of these, and how children’s privacy will be protected.

““Parents and teachers are the most important components in a child’s education,” said Karin Piper, executive director of Parent Led Reform. “Common Core was designed without the input of either families or education professionals. When you place a child’s education in the hands of politicians instead of parents the results should be expected to be disastrous. SB 210 would initiate the conversation that should have taken place before introducing Common Core Standards in the first place.”
