PHOENIX - May 2, 2013 - PRLog -- Stains are troublesome, but metal stains are by far the worst of the staining villains out there. There are many invasive stains out there for swimming pools; by far the most common however are these 5 notorious metal stains. In the following we will detail how they present themselves, how to treat them, and most importantly their sources. We will also touch on the benefits received from having an ultraguard pool defense against these most dastardly culprits that other pool paints and pool surfaces do not offer.

First is the most common in plaster/gunite pools, which is calcium. Sources of this most commonly include, but not limited to plaster, grout, and mortar or out of balance chemistry in the swimming pools water. This commonly shows up as white crystal-like precipitates that looks a little like rock candy. Ways to stop this from happening is to maintain pH levels between 7.4-7.8 and alkalinity between 80-120ppm. Calcium and water chemistry worries are typically not a concern when you have a fiberglass pool or hi-build epoxy pool coating that is chemical resistant and 100% solid like the Ultraguard Pool products.

Cobalt is our Second metal on the list and in the pool industry is infamously known as “The Black Plague”. “The Black Plague” is named as such because of the common black grimy spots that develop on the pools surface. This has nothing to do with your swimming pool’s water chemistry and everything to do with the fiberglass shell. These black eye sores are the result of the cobalt from the fiberglass underneath not being properly sealed. We find this most common in poor building materials or do it yourself swimming pool restorations done with fiberglass and vinyl ester gel coats. Almost never are these concerns with fiberglass pools that were done with hi-build epoxy coatings, opposed to gel coats. The attached picture is a good example of how this “Black Plague” presents itself. To note cobalt can appear as red, blue or gray in less common instances. There are products out there that can help get rid of the stains, but it gets costly since the spots will return repeatedly. In the long run you can save money by doing a pool restoration using ultraguard pool products, instead of repeatedly throwing money down the pool drain.

Third and next on the list is a very troublesome metal with many sources and even more ways to present itself. This metal is copper and has many sources such as copper algaecides, ionizers, copper corrosion, brass pipes, fittings and heaters. This appears as blue, green, teal, dark red, bluish green and black stains. For a visual presentation take a look at the attached picture. Some of these stains are very difficult to remove, especially the black ones, which often require a diphosphonic acid based stain remover applied directly to the stained areas. This does not include the need for a sequestering agent to make sure the copper doesn’t set out of solution and stain the swimming pool surface. Pool restoration for this is costly since it involves repairing the pipes and if a gunite pool a pool coating. To save face in front of this money stealing criminal it would be best to at least get a pool coating for easier clean up until a day the pipes or pool equipment can be repaired. Make sure not to get cheap pool paint, because this may just compound the problem and make the swimming pool a toxic mess when the swimming pool paint starts to fail. When considering a pool coating keep in mind Ultraguard Pool products are hi-build epoxy coatings with microban in it and cure 100% solid. The 100% solid will make it strong and easy to clean up. While it being an ultraguard pool hi-build epoxy will make sure it sticks like super glue to the surface of the pool and doesn’t fail. Meanwhile you got microban in it which helps to protect against algae’s, so that those copper ridden algaecides won’t be needed.  In the long run by choosing an ultraguard pool coating you will save money and headaches. To note Ultraguard pool products cannot prevent copper stains from happening. Though while you are saving up to get the pool equipment repaired the Ultraguard pool coatings 100% solid non-porous surface will make clean up  10 times easier until time comes for the pool equipment repair.

Now for the Fourth on the list and 2nd most common notorious metal that causes so many swimming pool owners such a pain, iron.  Iron typically comes from well water, iron pipes, fittings and heater corrosion. This is where it sometimes gets confused with copper due to the colors it presents itself as. Dark red, brown, black, gray and green are the typical colors of the stain, attached are some examples by which to compare. It is important to always find the source of any metal deposits in your swimming pool, but especially iron since a potential source may be your well water and iron toxicity is a health concern. The clean up is just like copper a sequestering agent and diphosphonic acid for the stain. If you run into a tough stain simply drop some Vitamin C tablets aka absorbic acid by the stain and let them dissolve around the area. This will make it easier to brush off the swimming pool surface, especially if it is non-porous and 100% solid ultraguard pool. Pool restoration for this is almost always an expensive one given equipment needs to be replaced and can even be crippling if it is a pool DE filter that is being replaced. To soften this blow it is highly recommended to apply an ultraguard pool coating given the fact it provides for easy clean up. Most cheap pool paints become stained indefinitely due to the fact they are never truly 100% solid and degrade fast into a surface that is minutely porous. By getting a pool coating like ultraguard pool coatings you will thank yourself in the long run given the costs involved with such stains.

Fifth and Final we come to the last and rarest culprit on the most unwanted list for your swimming pool surface, manganese.  The source for this is almost always well water and most often teams up with its partner in crime iron. Manganese stains appear as purple-pink, red or brown-black, but most troubling is the clear purple water it can give your swimming pool.  Examples are attached to plant a visual seed in your mind. Vigorous brushing seems to be the best with a sequestering agent put into the swimming pool. Pool Restoration for this is easily repaired with a pool DE filter and some well water treatment.

Save yourself the hassle by getting it fixed immediately and getting an ultraguard pool coating, not that cheap stuff. An Ultraguard pool coating can save you 50% on chemical costs and maintenance. An Ultraguard Pool coating is also one of the few pool coatings that pays for itself in the long run. To Learn more read  testimonials from other ultraguard pool owners at poolrestoration.com.
