SGS Provides Road Construction Supervision Services in Senegal

SGS was awarded a contract to provide comprehensive construction supervision services for road works in Senegal.
 
April 16, 2013 - PRLog -- In September 2012, SGS was awarded a comprehensive supervision services contract for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of road works to improve the Route Nationale 2 (RN2) in Senegal by Millenium Challenge Account Senegal. The twenty-six month project is funded by the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC).

The Millennium Challenge Corporation, established by the United States Congress in 2004, is an independent U.S. foreign aid agency leading the fight against global poverty. MCC and the government of Senegal have formed an alliance to financially support the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) Senegal in its efforts to reduce poverty in the Republic of Senegal through infrastructure investment and economic growth.

The MCC strategy in Senegal is structured around the integrated developmental programs of regional centers in both the country's northern and southern zones emphasizing integration of the northern trade route and the West African Ring Road.

For this particular project, MCC funding was appropriated for the renovation of 120 kilometers of 8 to 11 meter wide RN2 road between Richard Toll and Ndioum as well as the construction of a 160 meters long bridge and two slip roads of 750 and 550 meters in Ndioum.

SGS Road Construction Supervision Services for Senegal Project
Due to extensive SGS experience and competence in the construction sector and projects of this kind, SGS was selected to provide comprehensive construction supervision services (http://www.sgs.com/en/Industrial-Manufacturing/Services-R...) SGS experts have been charged with the supervision of engineering, procurement and construction to ensure the road project is completed within the budget and in accordance with national and international regulations and standards. SGS sent a team of a project director, project manager, one topographical engineer, a geotechnical engineer, two structural engineers, a road engineer, a quality expert, an environmentalist, two health and safety experts, five technicians and support and administrative staff to deliver services for the Senegal project.

Prior to the start of construction, SGS experts reviewed design and evaluated the contractor. Then, SGS supervisors began the overall coordination of construction, monitoring quality assurance and quality control (http://www.sgs.com/en/Construction/Services-Related-to-Su...) (http://www.sgs.com/en/Construction/Services-Related-to-Supply-Chain/Quality-Assurance-and-Quality-Control.aspx) of the works according to ISO norms, approving documents, verifying lab testing, controlling quantities and cost and minding schedules.

Still in the construction phase of the road works project, SGS health, safety and environment (HSE) experts are coordinating measures, implementing the integrated environmental and social action plans, analyzing impacts, enforcing rules to contain project-related negative impacts and ensuring compliance with environmental and social clauses. Experienced SGS staff is monitoring the financial and administrative aspects of the project. Furthermore, SGS is providing its Senegalese partners with monthly reports on the construction implementation progress as well as all health, safety and environmental measures and social actions taken. Upon project completion, experienced SGS personnel will supervise commissioning and oversee final acceptance of the works.
