Michigan Foot Doctor Says Stress Fracture May Have Contributed to Kevin Ware Injury

Michigan foot doctor Anthony Weinert DPM specializes in sports injuries, and explains how injuries like the one Kevin Ware suffered are possible in non-traumatic situations.

TROY, Mich. - April 2, 2013 - PRLog -- One Michigan foot doctor is still reeling from what he saw during a recent basketball game. For a few brief, excruciating minutes, the national celebration that is March Madness was halted in its sneakers. Millions watching two college basketball powers were shocked by yet another sports injury, one so horrific that CBS almost immediately stopped showing the replay.

Ware did not touch anyone, nor did anyone touch him. He simply landed awkwardly in front of his team’s bench after trying, and failing, to block a three-point shot by Duke’s Tyler Thornton, snapping the tibia and fibula of his right leg. One broken bone stuck through Ware’s skin. The injury was classified as a "compound" fracture, the most dramatic type of open fracture, because the bone broke through the shin and was plainly exposed.

Thankfully, Ware underwent a successful two-hour surgical procedure and is being aggressively treated with antibiotics to prevent post-surgical infections. But the question remains: how could this have happened?  How could a simple landing like that result in such a gruesome injury?

“This could be a case of osteoporosis & stress fractures” says Dr. Anthony Weinert, DPM.  “Vitamin D levels are at their lowest between March and April, and a vitamin D and calcium deficient diet combined with the repeated poundingWare endured through the basketball season, may have created small stress fractures in his lower leg, weakening the bone so that it eventually snapped during a non-traumatic, routine landing.”

Basketball is one of the safest college sports, and injuries like this are rare all around, only typically seen in football or car crashes.  However, stress fractures are incredibly common among athletes, especially female athletes.  That combined with risk factors associated with osteoporosis are a recipe for “freak” accidents like the one Ware experienced.

If you’re a Michigan athlete who lives by the “play hard” motto, you should schedule an appointment with Dr. Weinert to review your risk factors, your foot alignment, and your overall foot health.  If you suspect you have a foot injury or fracture, contact Weinert’s Warren office at 586-751-3338 or his Troy office at 248-362-3338.
