The two key areas that should be considered are where people cook and where guests and family will be sitting. We all know that the kitchen is the social hub but when your a preparing a meal you don’t want guests under your feet and in the way. When you are in the design phase you need to divide the kitchen into two distinct areas the first being the work area and the second being the socialising and eating area
To maximise the work area one might consider adding a kitchen island serving both as a work surface and a place that you can eat and socialise around. When placing the island be sure that you are leaving enough space to be able to move freely round your kitchen area without feeling that you have to squeeze into areas.
The way your kitchen is lit can also have a great impact on how your kitchen feels. You should try to use a few different methods of lighting to maximise impact
Make the most of natural light from windows by incorporating light reflective surfaces
Use ambient lighting to produce an even working light across the whole kitchen
Supplement the ambient lights with spotlights in those areas that need clear lighting such as above the hob or under the wall hung kitchen cabinets to illuminate the working area.
Use light pucks to light up glass fronted cupboards as well as strip lights to create an accent to the room
When you are designing a kitchen for your self think about your lifestyle and how you like to do things but also remember to use your space to its maximum effect taking to account an eating area as well as giving yourself enough space to prepare food.
