Indeed, the name by which she is known symbolizes the strength of the connection that she has forged with Mother Africa and its people. The first part of her name, “Nana” is an African title meaning “chief” or “queen mother.” Born and raised in the United States, Nana Ama Bonsu worked at the Nassau County Medical Center in Long Island when she first met a priest who was from Ghana. “Through that priest I met several different other priests from Ghana,” Nana Ama Bonsu recalls with unabashed fondness. “I began taking different priests from Ghana on tours around New York City and they were so appreciative that they got together and wanted to take me home.
