If your tree service cannot answer YES to each question, then hire a company that can:

Does the company have certified arborists on staff?  Certified arborists carry an ID card.

Does the company carry general liability insurance of a $1,000,000 or more?  Ask for a dated certificate.

Does the company carry workmen’s compensation insurance? Ask for a dated certificate.  If someone gets hurt on your property without this, the customer can be held responsible for paying for all injuries.

Does the company have a list of references?

Is the company a member of the ISA (International Association of Arboriculture) and the WAA (Wisconsin Arborist association)?  These organizations keep arborists current on everything arboriculture related.

Is the company licensed?  Madison, Stoughton, Verona, & other cities require this for tree care companies.

Does the company have annual equipment inspections?  Aerial units must be certified every year by Federal Law. Ask for the report.

Does the company practice safety standards set by OSHA -- including certification in CPR/FIRST AID from the Red Cross?  We have 2 people certified per crew.

Does the company own all the equipment to complete the job?

Does the company’s equipment have logos with contact information visible?  Fly-by-nighters have unmarked trucks and equipment.  Stay away from them!
