Emerald Ash Borer Now in Green County Wisconsin - Homeowners Have Options

The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is now pervasive in southern Wisconsin. Introduced to the U.S. in 2002, this bug has destroyed tens of thousands of trees. We've learned a lot and homeowners can prevent or even save an infected ash tree.

MADISON, Wis. - June 11, 2015 - PRLog -- A homeowner in the Town of Decatur Wisconsin found telltale signs of the Emerald Ash Borer this spring -- serpentine tunneling made by EAB larvae under the tree bark. Woodpeckers tear bark from infected trees as they feed on the larvae.

Green County is now added to other Wisconsin counties that have  confirmed emerald ash borer infestation:  Adams, Brown, Buffalo, Calumet, Columbia, Crawford, Dane, Dodge, Door, Douglas, Fond du Lac, Grant, Jefferson, Kenosha, La Crosse, Milwaukee, Monroe, Oneida, Outagamie, Ozaukee, Racine, Rock, Sauk, Sheboygan, Trempealeau, Vernon, Walworth, Washington, Waukesha and Winnebago counties.

The Emerald Ash Borer is native to China and likely entered the United States on packing material, showing up first in Michigan in 2002. It was first found in Wisconsin in 2008 in Ozaukee County.

EAB adults lay eggs on the bark of ash trees in mid-to late summer. When the eggs hatch a week or two later, the larvae burrow under the bar for the winter and feed, forming the characteristic S-shaped tunnels and destroying the tree’s ability to take up nutrients and water. In summer, the adults emerge through D-shaped holes in the bark.

The good news is that emerald ash borer is a slow moving pest on its own. The bad news is that it moves quickly and easily into new areas when people help it by moving it in firewood and nursery stock. More bad news - all of Wisconsin’s native ash species can be attacked and killed by emerald ash borer, including white (Fraxinus americana), green (F. pennsylvanica), black (F. nigra) and blue (F. quadrangulata) ash. Wisconsin's ash resource is vast in forestlands where there are 727 million ash trees and in the urban landscape where there are 5.2 million ash trees.
