Find out More about The Chrysler Groups Future in Fuel Efficiency

The multiple gear box is playing a major role in the quest among automakers to extract as much fuel economy and performance as possible from the internal combustion engine.

“Tougher fuel economy regulations are really driving it,” said Peter Frise,  CEO and technical director of  the Auto21 research network. “Between now and 2025,  fuel economy of cars will have to be doubled and that’s a very tough technical issue.”

Automakers in the U.S. and Canada must achieve a Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) rating of 54.5 miles per U.S. gallon for their 2025 model year passenger cars and light-duty trucks.

To meet those standards, Chrysler is betting on improvements in the traditional gasoline powertrain rather than electric or hybrid technology.  In partnership with German supplier  ZF Friedrichshafen AG, Chrysler is developing  nine-speed transmissions that will be first introduced into the successor to the  Jeep Liberty later this year, followed by the Chrysler 200 mid-size sedan and Dodge Dart compact sedan.

For the 2012 model year Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger sedans, Chrysler offered a 3.6 litre, V-6 engine mated to an eight-speed  automatic transmission.  Adding the eight-speeds to the  rear-wheel-drive 300 allowed Chrysler to advertise a 31 mpg  rating for highway driving, according to the U.S.  Department of Energy’s website. That compares with  an EPA rating of 27 mpg for the 2011 model of the 300 equipped with a five-speed transmission mated to a 3.6 litre, six-cylinder engine. The improvement  reduces  annual fuel costs from $2,400 US to $2,200.

Though he would not be specific, Chrysler Group spokesman Rick Deneau said the automaker expects  “improvements in fuel economy” from  the nine-speed automatic transmission.

During a 2011 visit to the Windsor Assembly Plant, which builds the Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country minivans, Chrysler CEO  Sergio Marchionne  said the nine-speed transmission will make its way into the next generation van. And at the recent North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Marchionne said adding a nine-speed automatic transmission to the Dodge Dart  will help boost struggling sales of the compact sedan.

“I think the nine-speed speed will become more common,” said Frise. “It’s a way of making an existing vehicle more fuel efficient and manufacturers are having to exploit every available technology to meet those fuel efficiency targets.”

The more gears built into transmissions the greater the fuel economy, Frise explained.

“Automobiles have gear boxes so that the engine can operate at its best operating point and the vehicle can be driven at a range of different speeds.” he said. “The more gears you have in the gear box, the more often you can match the speed of the engine with the road speed of the car at that particularly best efficient place.”

Though automakers will spend much of their research and development dollars on powertrain refinements, they are also looking at “virtually every part of the vehicle” for  fuel savings, said Frise.

“Vehicles will lose weight, become more aerodynamic and contain smart systems, such as anti-idling mechanisms, to help drivers become more fuel efficient, said Frise. “It’s a very exciting time to be in the technology area of the auto industry because of the demands of the fuel economy regulations, greenhouse gas emissions regulations and the imperative to enhance safety.”
