Feb. 24, 2013 - PRLog -- Presented annually by the Humane Society of the United States, the Genesis Awards are given to individuals in the major news and entertainment media for producing outstanding works which raise public awareness of animal issues.

National Mill Dog Rescue is a Colorado Springs based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is: to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home discarded breeding dogs and to educate the general public about the cruel realities of the commercial dog breeding industry. NMDR relies almost solely on volunteerism to care for the dogs, from the moment they are surrendered to the time they are adopted and beyond. NMDR depends on the generosity of the public to provide the highest level of care for their dogs and to continue to be able to rescue them.

Theresa Strader, founder of National Mill Dog Rescue had this to say about the nomination of ‘Saving the Discarded Dogs’:  “On behalf of our entire organization, I want to express my sincere gratitude to Fox 31 News for recognizing the importance of telling this story and to the Genesis Awards Committee for this distinguished nomination. It is a tremendous honor for our work to be highlighted amongst the other outstanding nominees. Our highest hope is that this nomination will further spread awareness about the cruel realities of the commercial dog breeding industry and the desperate need for change.”

National Mill Dog Rescue started with a single sentence e-mail that Theresa Strader received in February 2007: “50 Italian Greyhounds in need.”  A large-scale breeding operation or ‘puppy mill’ was going out of business and all 561 dogs were going to auction. One of those dogs was a seven-year-old Italian Greyhound named Lily. The moment their eyes met through the wire of Lily’s tiny cage, Theresa knew her life had changed forever and that this new life would include Lily and a mission to bring about lasting change.

In honor of Lily, in the summer of 2007, National Mill Dog Rescue was established to give a voice to puppy mill dogs across the country.  Since then, NMDR has rescued over 7,400 puppy mill survivors while proudly maintaining a strict no-kill policy. NMDR prides itself on providing the highest level of veterinary care to every dog they rescue, without exception. Immediately upon arriving, the dogs are groomed, many for the very first time in their lives. Soon they learn about all the simple pleasures they had never previously known – clean water, quality food, toys and treats, a soft bed, and most importantly, the love of a human companion.

The Genesis Awards Benefit Gala celebrates the role that news and entertainment media and other high-profile individuals play in raising awareness about animal issues. The event will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2013, at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, CA.
