Dec. 16, 2012 - PRLog -- Nassau County personal injury attorney Charles R. Gueli will be serving as a judge for the American Legion Oratorical Contest, which will be held on Dec. 10. The lawyer has been serving as a volunteer judge for this event since 2005. His service is a demonstration of his commitment not only to his clients, but also to his community.

The Oratorical Contest is an academic speaking challenge that is designed to teach its participants to “think and speak clearly,” according to the American Legion’s website. The event, which is designed for junior high and high school students, is also meant to teach participants the qualities of leadership, the history of the U.S. Constitution and the nation’s laws, and what it means to be an American citizen. The 2013 contest, which is called “A Constitutional Speech Contest,” requires its participants to give speeches before judges on topics related to the U.S. Constitution, with particular focus on citizens’ obligations to the government, according to the Department of New York American Legion.

Participants compete on various levels (county, district, zone, state and national), and winners receive college scholarships. The first-place national contest winner receives an $18,000 scholarship, while the second-place winner receives a $16,000 scholarship and the third-place winner a $14,000 scholarship, according to the American Legion. Those winning lower-level contests leading up to the national contest can also receive scholarships of lower amounts. About $138,000 in scholarship funds can be given out through the contest each year.

The American Legion is considered the United States’ largest wartime veterans service organization according to its website. The nonprofit organization, which was incorporated by Congress in 1919, has a mission of mentoring youth and providing community programs that promote values such as patriotism and honor. The American Legion raises donations for veterans and their families, as well as to provide college scholarships.
