Frustration Intensifies for Sandy Survivors reports HawkMovingDFW.com

Nov. 20, 2012 - PRLog -- San Francisco, CA- The slow pace of recovery is testing the patience of survivors of Hurricane Sandy.

The governor of New York recently lashed out at the Long Island Power Authority, saying the utility was mismanaging the recovery.

“Part of it is the management, and the performance, which has been unacceptable,” Gov. Mario Cuomo said, according to CBS News. “And they failed, they have failed the consumers.”

In New Jersey, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has set up to temporary housing sites. About 750 emergency workers share a tent city in Oceanport, N.J., with 60 storm survivors – many of them seniors or disabled. The camp provides hot food, laundry services and 20 tents with heating provided by generators.

For many others struggling in Sandy’s aftermath, power had not been restored. A storm Wednesday battered the Northeast and set back restoration efforts.

Some residents got their power back – but only temporarily.

“It was such a relief,” said Adela Bolet. “Oh my God, it was like returning to civilization.”

The Teaneck, N.J., resident regained power Monday but then had it knocked out again.

“All of a sudden, poof! And there we are, back in the Middle Ages,” said Bolet.

On Friday, utility workers had not restored electricity in Somerset County, N.J. Thousands remained homeless.

Across New York and New Jersey, 100,000 people were eligible for hotel subsidies, according to FEMA. The agency estimated 58,000 storm survivors would be able to receive aid to rent a home or repair damage to home.

Mobile homes are being moved into the region, and some officials that was a source of hope.

“I can’t build them apartments right now, in the next week, so we’re going to get them as close to their homes as we can get them,” said New Jersey’s governor, Chris Christie. “But I can’t wave a magic wand and create housing.”

Some New Jersey residents were expected to be allowed to return to homes to retrieve belongings and inspect damage.
