If you have been convicted of a DUI Conviction in California, and your license has been suspended in your home state– What can you Do?

I receive a lot of calls from non-California residents who have suffered a DUI conviction in California. The California Department of Motor Vehicles will suspend your license and notify your home state’s Motor Vehicle Department, who will then suspend your license.

If you did not hire an attorney, or if your attorney is not familiar with California Department of Motor Vehicles policies and procedures then he’s not a DUI specialist. And, here is what you’re going to have to do:

1. Contact the California DMV Mandatory Actions Unit in Sacramento.

2. Request an SB1650 form.

3. The California Department of Motor Vehicles will notify your home state Motor Vehicle Department once the form as been processed. Your home state should then fully reinstate your license.

This does not return to your privilege to drive in the State of California. Your privilege to drive in the State of California will remain suspended. However, your license will be valid in all of the remaining states.

If you ever move to California or want to be able to drive in California, you will need to attend and complete a California approved DUI school. Which school and the duration of the classes will depend on the nature of your violation.
