PRLog -- In just a couple of weeks, Pelham residents Lyn Roth-Jacobs and Bill Jacobs will open their home to an 8-year-old Nigerian girl and her mother, when they arrive for the child's life-saving open heart surgery at the Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center. The Rotary Club of the Pelhams has committed to a gift of $6,000 to pay for her surgery and aftercare. Lyn, an active Rotarian, has made this ongoing program part of her life, acting as one of the Club's liaisons to Rotary Gift of Life (GOL), and hosting families on two other occasions. “It's a life-changing experience to see children who are quite ill when they arrive from other countries, be transformed into healthy children after open heart surgery. It's gratifying and up-lifting to know that these children and teens can look forward to full lives and dreams fulfilled."
Rotary Club of the Pelhams' first GOL child was hosted by John and Lucy Carney in 1997. The program resumed in 2005 when the Club inaugurated Tastings, an annual food event dedicated exclusively to funding pediatric cardiac care for children in developing countries. Since then Tastings has generated nearly $200,000; enough to sponsor ten children for surgery in New York, either in the City or at the Fareri Children's Hospital in Valhalla. In addition, Tastings proceeds have funded surgical missions to El Salvador and Uganda, where hospital facilities have been outfitted and doctors/support teams trained, so that this vital pediatric cardiac care can be given to many more children, more efficiently and closer to home.
This year's Tastings VIII, with Presenting Sponsor Sound Shore Medical Center, will be held on Sunday, October 14th from 4PM - 7PM at the New York Athletic Club in Pelham. Over 15 great local restaurants will serve their premier menu items; wines will be selected and poured by Joe LaRocca of Pelham Manor’s French Wine Shop; with live music from the Pelham Jazz Ensemble, and a silent auction full of surprises.
Sound Shore Medical Center’s President & CEO John R. Spicer is Honorary Chair of this year’s event; Stiefvater Real Estate will be honored. Mr. Spicer is a long time Pelham resident and has led the expansion of the award-winning Sound Shore Medical Center for nearly 25 years. Marilyn and Scott Stiefvater have dedicated their professional and personal lives to Pelham: sponsoring teams, donating to Pelham’s many important causes, and taking a leading role in the Rotary Club’s major fund raising efforts. As it has for many years, Stiefvater Real Estate will be a sponsor of the event.
Tickets for Tastings VIII are $60 per person in advance, $75 per person at the door. For more information about the event or to order tickets, please email TastingsVIII@
