Knowles Animal Clinic Snapper Street Location

Sept. 7, 2012 - PRLog -- In 1923, Dr. A. T. Knowles, who was both a medical doctor and a veterinarian moved his family from Cheyenne, Wyoming to Miami. His Florida veterinary license was number three in the state. He bought a farm and converted the barn into a veterinary clinic and hospital that started what was to become the oldest single family owned veterinary practice in South Florida. A.T. Knowles’ son, Jack, continued the family practice and gave it national and international prominence within the profession by being elected the President of the American Veterinary Medical Association in 1963. Dr. Jack also pioneered many surgical procedures to treat pets with a fractured pelvis which was once thought to be untreatable. He was named Outstanding Veterinarian of the Year by the American Veterinary Medical Association in 1956. In 1970, he became a founding member of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine.

In 1963, he moved the practice to its present location at 1000 NW 27th Avenue. The building was expanded in 1990 and again in 2009 to its present size. Each expansion allowed us to provide more services and better care for your pets.

In 1971, Jane Ann Knowles married Dr. David T. Wise, Jr. who joined the practice in 1973 after finishing his internship at the Animal Medical Center in New York City. The practice continued to grow when Dr. James H. Block moved to Miami in 1974 from Illinois. The Knowles Snapper Creek office opened the first satellite clinic in 1974.

Dr. Wise and Jane Ann started it. When the practice grew, Dr. Block and Dr. Wise each worked there three days a week. In 1975, Dr. Block became director of Snapper Creek Animal Clinics and Dr. Wise returned to the central office full time. Snapper Creek has also expanded several times over the years including one that was just completed in 2011.

Knowles Animal Clinics was the first to provide 24 hour emergency services in Miami. Now both Central and Snapper Creek are 24 hour general practices and emergency clinics.

Thanks to Dr. Jack O. Knowles followed by Dr. David T. Wise and Dr. James H Block’s outstanding medical and surgical procedures, and state of the art technology these clinics have built a reputation for excellence and leadership in Miami veterinary medicine. Dr. Wise and Dr. Block are backed by a team of 14 veterinarians and a professional staff of nearly 100 employees. Both locations are AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) accredited meaning we aim to maintain the highest standard of medicine and care.

As mentioned earlier, we were the first to have a satellite clinic, the first 24 hour emergency clinic, the first to use computers, one of the first to perform TPLO’s (a procedure to correct torn cruciate ligaments in dogs), the first to use the cubex system for drug inventory, and the first to use stem cell therapy in Miami.
