Bayer Continues to Settle Yaz and Yasmin Claims and Increases Its Reserve for More Settlements

Aug. 3, 2012 - PRLog -- Bayer announced that as of July 19, 2012, it had reached agreements to settle almost 1,900 Yaz and/or Yasmin blood clot claims for a total of about $402.6 million.  [1]  This is a significant increase from the 500 lawsuits that had been settled several months ago for approximately $110 million.  Additionally, Bayer has more than doubled its reserve for these type claims, setting aside approximately $610.5 million, reports Bloomberg. In 2011, Bayer’s contraceptives generated $1.1 billion in sales making them one of Bayer’s biggest-selling drugs, according to Bloomberg.  [2]   According to a Bayer spokesman, the $610.5 million Bayer set aside is to pay the company’s costs beyond what insurance will cover for legal fees and accords, including cases that haven’t settled, reports Bloomberg. “These settlements are a drop in the bucket for Bayer when you look at its overall sales,” commented Ennis.
