According to the event Facebook page, the Gary Nix fishing tournament was created in 2002 to remember Gary who passed away at 16. Fun-loving and with a passion for fishing, Gary was a member of the Boys & Girls Clubs and was dedicated to working with children. It is in his spirit that this annual fund-raising tournament is held to provide scholarships for deserving children of the B&GC and abused, abandoned, and neglected children through Kids Charity of Tampa Bay.  The inshore tournament is a catch, measure and release tournament for Snook, Redfish and Trout.

The Bash on the Blue Fishing Tournament is one of several annual events that benefit the Kids Charity of Tampa Bay.  According to their website, Kids Charity of Tampa Bay is an organization of concerned individuals whose mission is to improve the quality of life for abandoned, abused and neglected children who are part of the foster care system and for foster families who are in crisis. KCTB supports several community initiatives including: A Kid’s Place, a 60 bed safe-haven for abused, neglected and abandoned children; the Safety Net Program, a referral program that provides funeral expenses, vehicle repairs, home repairs, counseling and other services to distressed foster families and children; Back to School Drives, an annual collection and donation of school supplies and funding for sports, music and special interests to benefit children in foster care; and Toy Drives, annual collections of gifts for children in foster care.
