July 23, 2012 - PRLog -- Seaside Eyecare Optometry is ever forward with the best technology and highest level of service for San Clemente Optometrists.  Dr. Jean Lim and her staff are helping to create awareness regarding the dangers of Diabetic Retinopathy and encouraging diabetes patients to get their eyes checked.

By the time most people notice vision changes from diabetes; their eyes may already be irreparably damaged by Diabetic Retinopathy.   The disease is caused by damage to blood vessels of the retina. The retina is the layer of tissue at the back of the inner eye and it changes light and images that enter the eye into nerve signals that are sent to the brain.

There are two types or stages of diabetic retinopathy.  Non-proliferative develops first.  Proliferative is the more advanced and severe form of the disease and having more severe diabetes for a longer period of time increases the chance of getting the disease. Retinopathy is also more likely to occur sooner in diabetic patients if they are less likely to control their disease.  Watch a video here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEWPinLwa_M

Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness in working-age Americans. People with Type 1 Diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes are at risk for this condition and nearly everyone who has had diabetes for more than thirty years will show signs of diabetic retinopathy.

Many people with early diabetic retinopathy have no symptoms before major bleeding occurs in the eye. This is why everyone with diabetes should have regular eye exams. The San Clemente Eye Doctor strives to slow the disease within the community.
