Motivation Monday ~ Has the Pendulum Swung Too Far Against Young Men?

So, here is my “Motivation Monday” question for you, especially parents of young men. Has the pendulum gone too far? Has decades of “fighting for equality” for young women now become a bias against young men?

July 9, 2012 - PRLog -- This week’s Motivation Monday was originally going to focus on the dismal Jobs Report that came out last week and encouraging people that are unemployed or in transition to continue to persevere and focus on “reinventing” themselves.

Then came along Dan Akst’s column: “Can Women Have it All ~ Is the Wrong Question”
Dan’s column begins like this:
“Can women have it all? A recent essay in the Atlantic Monthly has unleashed a furious debate. I actually have an answer to offer, but before I give it, I want to suggest that the focus is on the wrong question. A more urgent one at this juncture is: Can blue collar men have anything?   That may sound like a loaded question, but it's difficult to overstate the long-run economic cataclysm affecting this particular group (and, by extension, working-class women).”

I encourage you to read Dan’s article.

This month was the celebration of the 40th Anniversary of Title IX, the landmark ruling that required equality in college sports and scholarships for women.

In a recent Pew Research Report, which is referenced in Dan’s article, it states, “Since the early 1990s, more young women than young men have been completing college.”
The report does an excellent job of analyzing the importance of a college education in America and how young men seem to value it less.  It also shows that more parents pay for their daughter’s college education than boys.

I encourage you to read this as well.

So, here is my “Motivation Monday” question for you, especially parents of young men.  Has the pendulum gone too far?  Has decades of “fighting for equality” for young women now become a bias against young men?  Has our education system been adjusted to help young women be successful at the price of our young men?  We won’t even discuss the movement toward placing so many young men on Ritalin or ADHD medications.

We look forward to your thoughts.
