Ironman World Champion, Mirinda Carfrae, Joins Team World Bicycle Relief

Carfrae joins fellow athletes Jordan Rapp, Michellie Jones, Chris Horner and Ben King among others on Team Word Bicycle Relief

June 20, 2012 - PRLog -- World Bicycle Relief, an organization dedicated to providing people in need with access to independence and livelihood through The Power of Bicycles®, today announced that 2010 Ironman World Champion, Mirinda Carfrae, is the latest professional athlete to join Team World Bicycle Relief. Carfrae joins a powerful group of World Bicycle Relief ambassadors on Team World Bicycle Relief, including fellow professional triathletes Jordan Rapp and Michellie Jones, as well as professional cyclists Chris Horner and Ben King.

Team World Bicycle Relief was launched in the spring of 2012 to give amateur and professional athletes alike a new and exciting platform to combine their passions for sport and World Bicycle Relief’s work. Members of Team World Bicycle Relief are equipped with a full range of tools to raise funds and awareness for the organization while also having an opportunity to race in the team-branded triathlon and cycling apparel at athletic events of their choice.

It was in 2005, in the midst of the tsunami relief efforts, that F.K. Day, President of World Bicycle Relief and Executive Vice President of SRAM Corporation, created World Bicycle Relief to support education, healthcare, and economic development. To date, World Bicycle Relief has distributed over 103,000 specially designed, locally assembled, rugged bicycles to students, health care workers and entrepreneurs. It has also trained over 750 bike mechanics in African communities to ensure that recipient’s personal mobility is sustained

“A titanium or carbon composite bicycle at the top of the market is the difference between someone's one or two seconds in Kona, but the most powerful bike in the world is actually not on the Queen K. It’s a bike made of steel and is found in the hands of a 10 year-old girl, on her way to school, on a dirt road in Zambia, said F.K. Day “It is a real honor to have someone who has been a champion in Kona rallying for our students in rural Africa. We are so proud to have Mirinda on board with us.”

“I spend a lot of time focusing on my power on the bike,” said Mirinda Carfrae. “But I am also focused on the power of bicycles. In joining Team World Bicycle Relief, I am taking action to turn my passion for pedaling into progress and hope.”
