Glasgow in the Frame as advertising industry power base shifts West

Glasgow-based Frame has been named Agency of the Year at the Marketing Society’s Star Awards, signaling a shift from the industry’s traditional Edinburgh power base.

May 18, 2012 - PRLog -- Frame was recognised for a series of highly effective advertising campaigns that included helping turn the newly-refurbished National Museum of Scotland into the UK’s most popular visitor attraction outside of London.

Other major successes included helping to gain a multi-million UK audience for The Glenrothes Single Malt Whisky and generating a young global audience for Linn, the Glasgow-based-based manufacturer of high end music equipment.

It is the first time that the industry’s top honour has gone to an agency outside of the Capital since the awards were instituted in 2004. Four of of the other five shortlisted agencies in this year’s event - Story, The Union, RAPP and The Leith Agency – are based in Edinburgh.

The Star Awards, sponsored by Cello, are aimed at celebrating the most dynamic marketing campaigns in Scotland. Creative talent from the public and private sector on both client and agency sides – were out in force for the sell-out event at the Corn Exchange, Edinburgh and hosted by broadcaster, Kaye Adams.

Frame, founded in 1989, has emerged as one of the country’s leading agencies, with a portfolio of major clients including RBS, SSE and First Group.

Its “From Concepts to Crowds” campaign for NMS, helped to attract 1.3million visitors in six months, up by a third won the top award in the Arts and Culture category, beating other campaigns aimed at promoting Stirling Castle and the Museums Galleries Scotland’s Festival of Museums.

NMS commissioned Frame after completing a £47million transformation in 2011, including a complete revamp of the building with 8,000 new objects.

Frame was also nominated in the digital category for its “Just Listen” campaign for Linn, the Glasgow-based producer of elite music systems; in the Sponsorship category for its A Good Year for the Glenrothes Single Malt Whisky campaign; and in the food and drink category for The Lake District Cheese Company - Outstanding In Their Field.

Gary O’Donnell, the agency’s managing director, was nominated in the Agency Star of the Year category and creative director Angus Walker in the Creative Star of the Year category.

O'Donnell said: "Trading conditions in the marketing and advertising industry as a whole remain very tough but we have benefited from increasing numbers of clients looking for London quality at Glasgow prices, and we work really really hard at being lucky."
