By: EMSL So far no human or animal illnesses have been reported in association with this recall. In pets, symptoms of Salmonella poisoning can include lethargy, diarrhea, bloody stools, fever, vomiting, decreased appetite, abdominal pain, and possibly death. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), most people infected with Salmonella will experience diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after contracting the infection. Symptoms usually last for 4 to 7 days, and many people recover without treatment. However, small children, the elderly, and immocompromised individuals are more likely to develop a severe illness. In those cases, patients require hospitalization and treatment with antibiotics. The CDC estimates that approximately 400 people die of acute salmonellosis each year. “In testing for foodborne pathogens like Salmonella, EMSL Analytical provides the pet food industry with scientifically and legally defensible data,” states EMSL’s National Food Microbiology Supervisor, Joy Dell’Aringa, M.S., R.M.
