High Level of Vitamin D Leads to Bird Food Recall

April 23, 2012 - PRLog -- The Central Garden and Pet Company’s Kaytee brand is recalling two bird feed products: Kaytee exact Hand Feeding Formula Baby Birds and Kaytee exact Hand Feeding Formula Baby Macaw, due to high levels of vitamin D found in the products. Baby birds which have ingested this product are at risk of kidney failure due to the excessive levels of vitamin D in the formula.

According to the company’s news release regarding the recall, the elevated amount of vitamin D was added unintentionally to an isolated mixing batch during manufacturing. Batches which were manufactured before and after this isolated incident have been tested and are safe for consumption. All distributors have been notified of the recall and asked to reach out to their customers and immediately remove the product from their shelves.

Baby birds which have consumed the recalled formula may become weak and show a lack of appetite, vomiting, increased thirst, and increased urine excretion. The recommended treatment is a fluid treatment designed to keep the birds hydrated. Pet owners should stop the use of this product immediately and consult with their veterinarian.

“In addition to analyzing levels of the mandatory vitamins, A and C, required by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for nutritional labeling, we test for numerous additional vitamins, including Vitamin D,” states Shannon Kauffman, Food Chemistry Lab Manager. “Our nutritional analysis is compliant with the FDA’s laws, and RDI and DV percentages can be provided when applicable.”
