March 20, 2012 - PRLog -- PALM BEACH, FL--- Aker Press announces the launch of their new book, A PALM BEACH PICTURE BOOK, by local photographer and documentary filmmaker Leslie D. Weinberg.  Ms. Weinberg will be on hand to sign 1st edition copies of her book at Taboo Restaurant on Worth Avenue on Thursday, March 29th.   The event will take place during happy hour, 4:00pm – 6:30pm.

In homage to the Centennial anniversary of the island, the new edition contains 120 glossy pages with 270 color and black & white photos taken over a span of 25 years since the author began her career as a photo-journalist in Palm Beach.

Well known figures on the island whose narration accompanies the author’s photos include James Ponce, representing the "Old Guard," Bruce Sutka, the "New Guard" and artist/publisher Bruce Helander, the "Avant Guard." These three distinctive voices present an insider’s view of ‘The Story of Palm Beach, People & Parties’ and ‘Art Scene,’ sections in the book. Visual subjects documented include; Cars, Pets, Clubs and Unusual Occurrences in Palm Beach, which revisits such curious happenings as the KKK march down Worth Avenue in 1990, and the Mercedes tanker landing in Mollie Wilmot’s pool in 1986. Ms. Weinberg is pictured in front of the Mercedes Tanker taken when she was a reporter for the Palm Beach Daily News in the early 1980’s.

The author/photographer has delved into her archives to share rare photos of  Liz Taylor, and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. as well as local luminaries and socialites Betty McMahon and Gregg Dodge in the “Loved and Remembered” tribute in classic black & white. There is also a colorful selection of society snaps and artists’ portraits, showing a cross section of eccentric islanders, George Hamilton, Zsa Zsa Gabor,  Iris Apfel and a blast from the past with Count Jean de la Moussaye, Cornelia Guest and Mary Francis Turner partying it up at the Young Friends of the Red Cross Ball .

Assembling hundreds of photos over two decades to make another picture book, Leslie decided it was time when she discovered that her original tome, published in black & white in 1988 and out of print, was selling for eight times its original price on Amazon.

“I was shocked to find the book was such a collectable item, but people like nostalgia,” said the author,  “I wanted to do a book of my best photographs over the past quarter century  making something really special to celebrate the island ’s  century mark. ”

A Palm Beach Picture Book, ISBN # 978-0-615-57224-6, with Foreword by Bruce Sutka,
