King Island Dairy takes home three Champion awards at 2012 Australian Grand Dairy Awards

March 19

King Island Dairy are celebrating recognition from some of Australia’s top cheese judges, winning awards for two of their cheeses and their crème dessert, at the 2012 Australian Grand Dairy Awards (AGDA) on 14 March.

King Island Dairy’s Roaring Forties was awarded the 2012 Blue Cheese Champion, the best blue cheese in the nation along with the 2012 Champion Washed Rind cheese for King Island Dairy’s Stormy, titled as the best in its class. The King Island Dairy Belgian Chocolate Crème Dessert became the 2012 Champion of Dairy Desserts.

The judges focused their senses to award 19 champion cheeses, picked from 115 previously awarded AGDA champion cheese entries. The winning Belgian Chocolate Crème Dessert was part of 218 other dairy products which consisted of 11 classes across the dairy range.

King Island Dairy’s three winning entries are a testament to the passion from the remote island community, who view the quality of their craftsmanship as the result of a closely bound team and the pure ingredients at hand.

2012 Champion Blue Cheese -King Island Dairy Roaring Forties

King Island Dairy Roaring Forties Blue is a full flavoured blue with a sweet, slightly nutty character, a tropical fruit aroma and a full bodied flavour. This rindless cheese is matured in its wax coating, which cuts off the oxygen supply, promoting its sweet and fruity flavour. The wax also assists in retaining the blue's moisture, creating a smooth and creamy texture. The cheese is named after the infamous Roaring Forties gales which frequently bring westerly winds of more than 100km per hour to the island which lies on 40 degrees latitude.

2012 Champion Washed Rind Cheese - King Island Dairy Stormy

King Island Dairy Stormy is made in the style of Normandy’s famous Pont L'Eveque – one of the world’s strongest smelling and sweetest tasting cheeses. Known colloquially as 'stinky cheese' it has a wild and earthy aroma and an interior that is soft and mild with a surprisingly sweet and subtle buttery flavour. During creation the rind is washed with a special bacterium brine solution, delivering a distinctive aroma and red/orange colour.

2012 Champion Dairy Dessert - King Island Dairy Belgian Chocolate Crème Dessert

King Island Dairy Pure Cream and Belgian chocolate, combined to create a dairy dessert sensation that is truly indulgent - rich and creamy. A decadent mouth-watering treat on its own or the perfect accompaniment with seasonal fruit or dolloped on a tart.

The cheese-making team at King Island Dairy are dedicated artisans of cheese and dairy products, who always look to continue perfecting their ways, uncovering unique flavours through experience and pure ingredients.

King Island Dairy takes the pride of their community with them when attending awards events, showcasing the craftsmanship and purity generated from such a natural environment.
