March 2, 2012 - PRLog -- The Winnipeg roofing industry is made up of numerous different groups of roofing specialized companies that provide service and maintenance to residential and commercial roofs; including re-roofs, new roofs, roof repairs and other exterior upgrades. Currently in Manitoba, the majority of the workforce in this industry is employees (80%) while the remaining 20% are self employed as independent contractors. Employment within the Winnipeg roofing industry for 2009 was estimated at around 580 employees, 99% male, where they currently averaged a salary of $37,600 per year. Of the 580, 63% are within the Winnipeg region. Currently, roofers have high turnover rates for employment due to the fact that the industry is highly seasonal.

The Winnipeg roofing industry continues to grow steadily as new houses are continually being built.  The extreme climate fluctuation experienced in the Winnipeg region causes old homes to require new roofs roughly every 20-25 years. This makes the possibility for attainable industry growth, due to the high demand from new housing and roof repairs

In the roofing industry the threat of a new entry is high, and anyone wanting to start up a roofing company is able to with only a small personal investment. However, experience and extensive knowledge are strong assets when choosing to enter the industry.

Winnipeg Roofing Macro Environment
The roofing business in Manitoba is an expanding industry.  With the provinces GDP increasing by 3.1% in 2010 and approximately 3% in 2011, Winnipeg is continuing to grow as a city.  We are not only exporting goods but we are also selling them within our province.  Manitoba was one of the few provinces least affected by the economic downturn, and now, as Canada as a whole begins to dig its way out, Manitoba, and Winnipeg in particular are beginning to thrive, with the province gaining over 9000 payroll jobs.  A large issue in Canada and the world is the aging baby boom era. However, with Manitoba’s standard of living very being relatively inexpensive, many Manitobans are choosing to retire and stay in Manitoba in either a condominium facility or a small home. With an increase in the number houses being bought and sold within Winnipeg alone, this creates a large market for the Winnipeg roofing industry because of the added value a new roof brings to a home on the market.  An important statistic to look at is not only the number of new homes being developed, but the number of houses that were built and now need improvements, including a new roof.  In a study done by Destination Winnipeg, they stated that around 6000 dwellings were built in the mid 80’s. Using a safe assumption that roughly the same amount of houses were built in the early 80’s and late 70’s, we can assume that there are around 22,500 houses built between 1978 and 1982 that need to be re-roofed completely, with the belief that only 25% of them will already have been re-roofed.  Also, approximately 7000 homes were built from 1990-1995 that Adamson Roofing believes should be redone within a 5 year forecast.  With the number of houses being built and the amount of aging houses increasing, there is a strong demand for dependable and respectable roofing contractors.

Potential Winnipeg Roofing Market
In Winnipeg, the current population is approximately 665,700, which is, at present, growing at an average rate of 1.1% and it is expected to reach 740,900 by 2020. This growth among Winnipeg’s population is expected to reach 740,900 by the year 2020. These numbers show an expected increase of 7% in the age demographic that the majority of companies in the Winnipeg Roofing Industry focus their marketing efforts on. Population growth numbers only encompass the city of Winnipeg and do not take into account the surrounding area, in which Adamson Roofing also serves.

Popular Winnipeg Roofing Products
When it comes time for a Winnipeg Resident to install a new roof on their home many options are available. They different products include, metal roofing products, recycled roofing, wood roofing and the most popular being asphalt based shingles. Due to the advances in roofing materials asphalt shingles are available in a wide variety of colors, styles and warranty levels allowing the homeowner to select the right product to achieve the desired look and protection for their home. Due to the initial installation cost asphalt shingles are the number one choice but if you plan on staying in your home for a considerably period of time upgrading to a metal roof will likely be more cost effective over the lifespan of the roof.
