West of the Moon ATA Teaches Child Safety to Oswego
Does your child know what to do in a dangerous situation? West of the Moon ATA helped teach local kids how to deal with strangers, what to do if their house caught fire, and many other life-threatening situations in its quarterly child safety class.
The Kidz'n Power program is offered within the American Taekwondo Association and has been endorsed by AmberAlert.com. The program is designed to teach kids how to react in life-threatening situations (kidnappings, house fires, etc). Parents are also encouraged to play an active role in their child's safety.
"It gives some parents a wake-up call as to how their kids would react in dangerous situations,"
The class is taught with a companion DVD. Kids are able to watch several different real-world scenarios and talk through how they'd respond before learning the right course of action to take. The best part about the class is every kid receives a student version of the DVD they can take home to reinforce what was taught during the class with their parents.
The self-defense portion of the class was taught by West of the Moon's chief instructor, Nick Zorn. "Our seminar is a good way to introduce kids to safety, but regular martial arts training gives these kids the tools they need to really defend themselves in dangerous situations,"
