Feb. 17, 2012 - PRLog -- Did you know that the 20th – 26th February 2012 is in fact known as ‘Chip Week’? In Britain it appears we just can’t get enough of chips with a recent survey confirming that 87% of the population love chips. Add this to the fact that we eat 300 million portions of fish and chips in Britain each year and that there are more than 10,000 fish and chip shops in the UK – it adds up to a pretty good business.

Picking your favourite chip

A quarter of all potatoes grown in Britain are made into chips – that’s around 1.5 million tonnes each year. For homes and businesses, chips are always going to be a popular choice; whether that is an odd treat from the local chip shop, chips on the side of a meal out, or a comfort meal of chips at home. With so many varieties available, it’s not really surprising that we are a nation of chip lovers. From the classic to the curly and on to the wedges, each person will have their unique favourite.

Cooking the perfect chip

Cooking them to perfect is of course the key, so having the right equipment to do the job is always a must.

For the takeaways and the restaurants, fryers are what should be purchased. Make sure you don't fill a chip pan or other deep-fat fryer more than one-third full of oil and use a thermostat-controlled deep-fat fryer, which will make sure the fat doesn't get too hot. For ease of serving, remember ship scoops.

Serving chips

For takeaways, you can’t forget the all important wooden chip fork as they surely are custom by now aren’t they?! Depending on how you want to serve your chips, you can of course opt for the traditional tray wrapped in paper, or the paper chip cone if you’d prefer. For fries, you have the scoop boxes.

Chips are never complete without salt and vinegar, and for many, ketchup. In a takeaway many will have the salt and vinegar pots behind the counter, but many will now leave the chips unwrapped and allow the customers to add as much of each as they want.

In restaurants, chips often come on the side of plates or a separate bowl if they are served on the side. It’s also not unusual now for chips to be a meal on their own with various toppings such as cheese or chilli, whatever takes your fancy really.

There is a reason why chips are such a popular choice and the fact that they have been around so long shows this. It is believed in the 1860s the first fish and chip shop was opened in London by Joseph Malin. There are also claims that the first fish and chip shop was in premises near Mossley, near Oldham in Lancashire.
