Feb. 5, 2012 - PRLog -- In San Diego, air-conditioning may use up to 70% of your electrical bill in summer months, according to some estimates. The fact is there are ways for people to reduce this load by simply changing some of their air-conditioning habits. Here is a list of some ways to reduce your electric bill:

• Buying a bigger air-conditioner isn’t always better. An air-conditioner that is too big won’t generate uniform temperatures or reduce humidity. It will also cycle on and off too often and not be efficient. Your air-conditioning contractor can recommend the proper size unit for your home.

• Don’t put your air-conditioner in a hot spot because it will cause it to work too hard. Put it in a shady spot so that it will receive less direct sunlight.

• Don’t try to hide your air-conditioner behind shrubs or plants. Having good ventilation is important so that you don’t have clogged condenser coils.

• Don’t ignore proper maintenance. Clean or replace filters every 2 or 3 months. If there’s a lot of dust or pet hair in your home, replace them more often. Have your air-conditioner serviced by a qualified contractor once a year. This will give your unit a longer life.

• Don’t leave your unit running all day. If there is no one home during the day, your unit doesn’t need to run all day. Use a programmable thermostat that can cool the house before you get home from work each day.

• Be careful about closing off vents in your home. This can reduce the efficiency of your unit so talk to an expert first.

• Find a comfortable temperature and leave your thermostat set there. Turning your thermostat down to 70 won’t cool your house any faster and will run your electric bill up.

• Make sure your thermostat isn’t near lamps, televisions, stereos or other heat-generators that could cause your unit to run too often.

• Using ceiling fans can help dramatically if used properly. Make sure the air is pushed downward, creating a wind chill effect. It will make you feel cooler.

• Exhaust fans in the kitchen and bathroom can push cool air out of the house, so be careful. They should be used very sparingly in summer months.
