Feb. 2, 2012 - PRLog -- Maynard, MA– Virtual High School Global Consortium (http://www.govhs.org), the pioneer of K-12 online learning and course design for teachers, today announced a new course for K-5 teachers that is designed to overcome the difficulty many instructors have teaching fractions. Starting on February 29, Virtual High School (VHS) is demystifying the understanding of fractions for K-5 teachers so that they learn new strategies for teaching this complex subject matter.

Drawing on their expertise in professional development and their experience creating dozens of online math courses, VHS is offering Fractions for Elementary School Teachers online. Designed to promote the understanding of fractions from both a conceptual and procedural perspective, the course does everything from familiarizing teachers with the Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice to helping them learn how technology can help students develop mathematical concepts. During the course, teachers participate in weekly discussion forums and activities. At the conclusion, they produce a final project specific to the grade level they teach to demonstrate what they’ve learned.

“This course offers teachers a new approach to teaching fractions,” said Liz Pape, President & CEO of VHS. “By incorporating digital technologies like animations, simulations and games into their instruction, teachers are able to make this difficult subject fun and easier for kids to understand.”

The course is available online to all K-5 teachers worldwide. The cost for staff of existing VHS member schools is $245 per course and for non-members, $345 per course. Teachers can earn 67.5 PDPs (6.75 CEUs) for completing the course. Three graduate level credits are available for an additional fee.
