Poe Property Gift/Purchase Enables Future Expansion Opportunities for WakeMed Raleigh Campus

Jan. 24, 2012 - PRLog -- WakeMed Health & Hospitals today announces the grandchildren, great grandchildren and family members of Clarence and Alice Aycock Poe have generously gifted the historic Longview House, or Poe House as it is often referred to, and two acres of land upon which it sits to the WakeMed Foundation.

WakeMed has also purchased an additional 13.5 acres adjacent to the Longview House and WakeMed Raleigh Campus.   The location of the land and home offer an excellent opportunity for expansion of the WakeMed Raleigh Campus.

“WakeMed is very grateful to the Poe family for their generous donation and for the opportunity to purchase the land that directly abuts our flagship hospital campus. Although specific plans have yet to be developed, the property holds great promise for facility and service future expansion,” commented Dr. Bill Atkinson, WakeMed president and CEO.

“Furthermore, the land and house donation is a fitting tribute to the late Clarence Poe,” Dr. Atkinson continued.  “Clarence Poe was a visionary leader in many areas including agriculture, technology and science, print media, public and social policy, and healthcare.  Clarence Poe is well known for treating people with equality and a lifelong commitment to the health and wellbeing of our community and our state.  This commitment will be embodied in the development of healthcare resources upon his land for the benefit of future generations.”  

The Poe House gift, which includes two acres of property, was appraised at $970,000.  WakeMed purchased the remaining property for $4 million.  The transaction closed December 20, 2011.
