By: Tornado Military News Gandhi pioneered the use of non-violent resistance through mass civil disobedience used to fight for civil rights and freedom for the Indian people. His civil rights movement in South Africa included helping to organize peasants, farmers and urban laborers in protesting excessive land tax and discrimination. As the leader of the Indian National Congress, he led nationwide campaigns for easing poverty, expanding women's rights, ending "untouchability" Gandhi was imprisoned many times and for many years both in South Africa and India, yet he strove to practice non-violence and honesty in everything he did and called upon all to do the same. While there are many great quotes from this great leader, we chose to focus on this particular quote reminding us that peace is not achieved through violence. "Peace will not come out of a clash of arms but out of justice lived and done by unarmed nations in the face of odds." ~ Mahatma Gandhi One must ask the question: Can we achieve peace without war? Both Dr. King and Gandhi did and succeeded but also paid with their lives in the process. In their pursuit of peace, they were themselves victims of violence. Gandhi was assassinated on January 30, 1948 leaving behind a legacy of non-violence through his example. He was mimicked by Dr. King and many other great leaders and public figures like John Lennon, Nelson Mandela, Al Gore and our very own president, Barack Obama have publicly acknowledged Ghandi's influence on them.
