Jan. 17, 2012 - PRLog -- A local pool company is making efforts to help kids in our community, in many more ways than simply providing places for them to swim. Pool Pros and Aqua Illusions of Fort Myers are sponsoring the Calusa 5K BUG (Bring Up Grades) Run, a fundraising event for the Fort Myers Metro-McGregor Kiwanis. The event will take place on Saturday, January 21st at Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium from 6:30 am to 10am. Tickets are $35.

“Changing the world one child and one community at a time,” is the defining statement of the Kiwanis. Pool Pros owner, Joe Mitchell (http://www.poolpros-inc.com/about/), shares this passion for helping children in our community.

“We have come to know the members of the Kiwanis as we have worked together at the numerous Chamber events,” said Mitchell. “I run my business on the principles of trust and being available, so when we can sponsor an event that benefits our kids… we are there. It is really great to see businessmen, educators, volunteers and everyone get together. We know the future leaders of this community are being educated in our school system right now, and we want to provide them with every possible opportunity we can. Some day they will be making decisions for us!”

Joe’s wife and owner of Aqua Illusions, Theresa Mitchell added, “The BUG program really helps kids succeed in their studies and keeps them learning. We were honored to be able to sponsor this event. We have two young children in the Lee County School System and are happy to participate where ever we can."

The Mitchell’s are strong supporters of education, in Lee County, as evidenced by their sponsorship of many educational fundraising events. Some of these include, support of Pace Center for Girls and participation in Heights Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students), a group providing positive male role models in schools.

All profits from this community 5K run will benefit local area students. The Kiwanis BUG program promotes diligence and success by providing incentives to children needing help in school. Students are encouraged to reach beyond what they think they can do; raising their grades to an acceptable range and then continuing to do well in school.

At the Calusa 5K BUG event, runners and spectators will have the opportunity to experience what their community has to offer at Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium, which is providing the back drop for the run. The center is a not for profit, environmental education organization situated on 105 acres. It features a museum, a planetarium, butterfly and bird aviaries, gift shop, picnic areas and three nature trails. Visitors may also want to view the animals residing at the center, which include a bobcat, skunk, white tail deer and raccoon.

The Fort Myers Metro-McGregor Kiwanis’ website states that, “’BUG’ is the major community service focus” of the club and that the program is in operation at Orangewood, Colonial and Littleton Elementary Schools. They are also actively seeking more schools to participate in the program. Sponsors like Pool Pros and Aqua Illusions are helping the Kiwanis reach that goal.
