Jan. 16, 2012 - PRLog -- (MACOMB, MICHIGAN)  -- The findings of a recent study on the HyProCure® talotarsal fixation device have been published in the Journal of Foot & Ankle Surgery (JFAS 51 (2012) 23-29). The purpose of this research, “Extraosseous Talotarsal Stabilization Using HyProCure®   in Adults: A 5-year Retrospective Follow-up,” was to determine long-term functional outcomes and device tolerance achieved in a randomized adult population treated with the HyProCure® device for symptoms associated with excessive abnormal pronation.

Excessive abnormal pronation, or hyperpronation, is a condition affecting millions of people around the world. It is most commonly caused by instability of the ankle bone (talus) on the hindfoot bones (tarsal mechanism). The talotarsal joint partially dislocates with each step, leading to excessive abnormal forces acting first on the foot, and then through the entire body. These forces can lead to many secondary conditions, such as bunions, heel pain, and other foot deformities, as well as knee, hip, back and even neck and shoulder pain.

In this follow-up study, patient satisfaction scores showed excellent long-term results, with a high level of tolerability and overall improvement in the quality of life of the patients. Eighty-three adult patients on whom the HyProCure® procedure was performed participated in this study. Follow-up assessments were collected for each patient an average of two years after surgery. The assessment asked patients to evaluate outcomes in three key areas – pain, foot function and foot appearance. The average total score was 88 out of 100. In each category, the majority of patients chose the highest possible satisfaction rating; 52% reported complete alleviation of foot pain, 69% had no limitations on their foot’s functional abilities and 80% reported complete satisfaction with the appearance of their foot. The implant showed a removal rate of less than 6%, which is significantly lower than reported rates of other subtalar implants, which range from 30-40% removal. The low removal rate and minimal postoperative complications are attributed to the unique design and insertion properties of HyProCure®.

The stability of the talotarsal joint is crucial to maintain proper balance, uniform weight distribution, normal gait pattern, and biomechanical function, not only for the foot and ankle but also for the proximal musculoskeletal structures (knee, pelvis and spine). The long-term positive subjective outcomes and excellent patient satisfaction obtained in this study imply that extra-osseous talotarsal stabilization (EOTTS) is effective in stabilizing the talotarsal joint complex and eliminating excessive abnormal pronation, thus reducing pain and improving quality of life for patients. HyProCure® represents a real solution for flexible talotarsal dislocation and its devastating effects throughout the body.
