Dec. 18, 2011 - PRLog -- After 30 years of crafting New Zealand wine, Giesen brothers Theo, Alex and Marcel have at last opened their first Cellar Door to showcase their world famous wines directly to Kiwi wine lovers and international visitors.

Located along Marlborough’s “golden mile”, Rapaura Road, the Cellar Door is initially offering tastings and sales.

One of the three co-founder brothers, Theo Giesen, notes: “Yes, it has been a while coming….we laid our roots in Marlborough back in 1993 when we bought our first Marlborough property - Dillons Point Vineyard in the highly sought after Wairau Valley. In 2000 we moved our winery to Marlborough and we’ve expanded it every year since, establishing over 700 acres of vineyards in the region.”

“Since coming to the region we’ve had one simple focus – ‘making wines people want to drink’, now we’re confident we’ve got that sorted, we want to create an environment where people want to enjoy them,” Theo said.

“It’s early days, but we are looking forward to continually developing the Cellar Door and creating a relaxed environment where people enjoy dropping by – just as industry colleagues do at our homes.

“Additionally it’s great to have space to display the international trophies and awards we have received for our winemaking over the past 30 years.”

The property was purchased in September and Marlborough local, Victoria Lewis, has been appointed to manage it.

Visitors to the Cellar Door can taste their way through Giesen’s range of wines - all of which come from the region. In addition to Giesen’s current releases wine lovers also have the opportunity to taste back vintages which have been perfectly matured in Giesen’s Marlborough winery. Guests can expect to try some Cellar Door exclusive wines including results of the winemaking team’s ongoing sauvignon blanc trials.  All the wines will be served perfectly fresh thanks to Enomatic wine dispensing systems which have been installed.

The Giesen brothers are also considering introducing casual lunchtime dining, benchmark and varietal tastings for guests and the capacity to host private functions.

About Giesen

There is strength of character and determination about the German-born Giesen brothers Theo, Alex and Marcel, who made the bold leap to make wine in New Zealand in 1981. Over the past 30 years, they have established 700 acres of vineyards in Marlborough’s highly sought after Wairau Valley with one simple aim – make wines that people want to drink.

Giesen remains firmly family owned and has come a long way since brothers Theo, Alex and Marcel first planted grapes in Canterbury 30 years ago – all of the vineyards and the winery are now located in Marlborough whilst the bottling operation, warehouse and support office are based in Christchurch.
