Common Threads Writing Competition -- Three prizes announced by Pog Apparel

Dec. 7, 2011 - PRLog -- All cultures have a rich clothing heritage. Weaving and sewing are common and time-honored practices across the globe.

It is no wonder that such important and meaningful skills have been passed from the hands of one generation to the next, for thousands of years. We all have an intimate relationship with what we wear. It keeps us warm and dry or protects us from the sun. When we give clothing as a gift, we try to choose something that we think the recipient will feel comfortable wearing. And we often use our clothes as a statement about how we are feeling and who we are.

In this season of giving, as the earth teeters towards its maximum tilt and those living in the Northern Hemisphere are approaching their shortest day of the year, while those in the Southern will soon be enjoying their longest day, let’s take a moment to think about the common threads that bind us all together.

This writing contest is open-ended. Your submission may be as short or as long as you like (keep in mind that we will not read a novel, though!) It may be in the form of an essay, short story, poetry, or any manor of communication that you can upload, or provide a link for viewing.

In order to be considered, the submission must relate to the theme of clothing and ethnic culture. It may be about giving a gift, or receiving one. It may describe craft traditions within families or cultures. It may be about cross-cultural sharing of ideas, creativity, or material goods. It may be fiction, but it should be based on an authentic cultural aspect of an ethnic group or region.
