Professional working mums are joining forces

Dec. 7, 2011 - PRLog -- This year a new web-community was launched for professional working mums. Today it was announced they have been growing fast and are attracting a wide range of members. Not surprisingly perhaps, as it is not-for-profit and all the work on the website is done by volunteers, mostly working mums.

The site is jam-packed with high-quality links and articles on issues such as guilt, confidence and juggling time. An events calendar publishes educational and inspirational events for women. The main aim is to answer that famous question ‘How does she do it?’

“I started it as there is actually little support for professional working mothers on the web, or anywhere else. Most mums-sites and magazines focus on parenting and childcare advice only. At the same time work typically isn’t a topic discussed at the school gate either, and at work you are supposed to function like before children. So, when it comes to working out how to balance work and family needs you are on your own, figuring out through trial and error what works. Personally I would have found this kind of support invaluable.” Says founder Inge Woudstra

It is a bit surprising to find working mums need special support. Surely it has become so much easier for women and most women do work nowadays?

“It surprised me too”, says Inge Woudstra, “I thought I was the only one who found it difficult to find a balance. Then I learned from a focus-group which I organised, that most of us are totally unprepared for parenthood and how it might impact our careers. Interestingly, it’s not just once, when you have the baby, but also when you have the second one, when they go to school, when they become teens, when you have a new boss or start a new demanding project. Each time your situation changes, you have to re-invent yourself, and sort out how to make it work. That’s where Mum & Career comes in, we make these choices easier by offering information, support and information. A place where you find people who know what you are going through. ”

A key function of the site is to sign-post to other organisations and services for working women, unlocking the support already out there. They welcome partnerships and collaboration.
