Computer Security Day 2011, How To Get Involved

Nov. 30, 2011 - PRLog -- November the 30th is international Computer Security Day. This day start way back in 1988 and is supposed to create awareness of computer related security issues. The goal of the day is to remind people about computer security which is of increasing importance in today’s world, where we continue to rely on machines more and more.

If you are part of the IT sector then November 30th is a day where your business can help to raise awareness of security issues with your customers. Typically on this day businesses will perform activities to mark the occasion although any and everybody should be taking part and paying more attention when it comes to computer security.  

You can get involved by doing the following:
•   Change your password. This will help to keep your information secure, make sure you don’t use anything too obvious, to make it more secure use a mixture of numbers, letters, upper and lower case and symbols.
•   Scan your computer for viruses. Sometimes you can have a computer virus and not even know it. There are plenty of antivirus programs you can use for this.
•   Create a computer security policy. This can involve making a few simple rules, which will help people in your business or home to keep their computer safe from viruses and hackers.
•   Make sure you are aware about how to handle suspicious emails and social media posts which could contain viruses.
•   If you are a webmaster and you use a Content Management System CMS, take this opportunity to update the software to the latest and most secure version.
•   Create a login for your computer.
•   Make sure all your security related updates are applied to your operating system.
•   Update your antivirus software program.
•   Let everyone know that it is Computer Security Day.

Each year Computer Security Day has a different theme and this year’s theme the subject is “Information Security is Everyone’s Responsibility”. This is so true, with increasing amounts of time spent online on social networks people are irresponsible with information. You would be surprised to learn how much personal information you can gather from someone’s social media profile.
