Woodmeister Master Builders Receives Distinguished MIDDIE Award

Design New England presented the first Mentors in Design Award (MIDDIE) to Ted and Kim Goodnow of Woodmeister Master Builders for their achievements in creating a corporate culture of mentoring.

Nov. 21, 2011 - PRLog -- (Holden, Mass.)  On November 17th, Ted and Kim Goodnow, co-owners of Woodmeister Master Builders, were presented with the first Mentor of the Year MIDDIE award during Design New England’s 5th anniversary celebration. Three other Distinguished Mentors were also honored. The award ceremony was held at the Cyclorama and the Boston Center for the Arts on Tremont Street in Boston.

Design New England’s MIDDIE recognizes mentors who teach, guide, encourage, and support the next generation of design and building professionals.  The Goodnow’s were honored with the Mentor of the Year award for their efforts to create a corporate culture around mentoring both within the organization and to the extended community.

Ted and Kim Goodnow have created a corporate culture around mentoring. “That is what really makes them stand out,” said David Shapiro, President and CEO, Mass Mentoring Partnership, one of the panel judges. “They have taken mentoring and made it an institutional imperative.”

The Goodnow’s believe that life-long learning – and mentoring – is essential for success as individuals and as a company. They have implemented and inspired many programs over the years at the company, such as the Next Level Leadership Program, a year-long employee coaching program designed to develop leadership skills throughout the company.  This program gives employees the training and tools they need to be successful in their jobs and to help each other through mentoring.

Mentoring initiatives also reach into the community. Many organizations from the Boys and Girls Club, Boys Scouts and local trade schools have benefited from the Goodnow’s goodwill to help foster youth development and sow the seeds of a future workforce with strong values and skills.

The MIDDIE Selection panel included Nancy E. Hackett, IIDA, IDEC, NCIDC, Associate Professor and Co-Director of Interior Design Program, The New England School of Art  & Design at Suffolk University, David Shapiro, President and CEO, Mass Mentoring Partnership, and Peter Wheeler, President, Sara Campbell Ltd.

What are the MIDDIES?
MIDDIE (Mentors in Design pays tribute to the men and women in the fields of architecture, interior design, building, landscape design, and related disciplines who generously share their time, wisdom, and expertise with the next generation. Inspired by the Over My Shoulder Foundation, the MIDDIES were established to promote, cultivate and recognize mentors within the design community.
