Nov. 17, 2011 - PRLog -- November is American Diabetes Month, a time to bring awareness about this devastating disease so we can join the movement to stop diabetes.

Diabetes continues to be a current epidemic in our country.  Nearly 26 million children and adults suffer from this disease, and 79 million more are at risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes.  However, following three simple steps can help prevent this disease.  Eat balanced meals, increase physical activity, and maintain a healthy weight.

What should you eat?  Foods such as fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains are excellent healthy choices. Low fat milk and cheese, lean meats, fish, and chicken or turkey without the skin should be eaten in moderation. Meat portions should be 3-4 oz., or about the size of a deck of cards. Bake, broil, or grill. Eat more foods that have less salt and are high in fiber. If you are wondering about a healthy meal plan ask your health care professional to help you create one.

Try to get at least 30-60 minutes of physical activity three to four times a week. That can include activities such as biking, brisk walking, gardening, yard work, or just playing with your children. Do what you can to get moving.  Consult your physician before starting any exercise program.

If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, you can take control.  When blood glucose levels are close to normal you are more likely to have more energy, be less tired, heal better, and have overall fewer health problems.  Learning to check your blood glucose levels is an important part of staying healthy with diabetes.  For more information contact your physician or local dietitian.

Diabetes affects many of us in Eastern North Carolina, but you can fight back.  By following these simple steps, you can help in the fight to make diabetes a thing of the past.  Making a change isn’t easy, but you’re worth it.
