Nov. 15, 2011 - PRLog -- Carpineto’s Chianti Classico is world-renowned, enjoyed in more than 70 countries and adored by Australians for years. After developing a close relationship with Carpineto, Dan Murphy’s imported wine team asked them to produce a Chianti Classico which was closed under screw cap. They were told screw cap closure was impossible under D.O.C.G. specifications and so, thumbing their noses at centuries of tradition, Spolverino was ‘hatched’.

Closely akin to the structure and flavour of the Chianti Classico, Spolverino is produced in the Tuscan method but closed under screw cap. Translated as ‘feather duster’; its name pokes fun at Chianti’s emblem, the black rooster, and the notion that Spolverino was ‘rooster one day, feather duster the next.’

Carpineto was established in 1967, by the Sacchet and Zaccheo families, with the aim of making modern fresh red wines from Chianti Classico. It is located at Dudda, surrounded by eight hectares of vineyard planted with sangiovese and canaiolo. At an elevation of 300 metres, the vines are anchored in calcareous soil; an ancient sea bed laden with fossils. Carpineto also has significant vineyard holdings in Montepulciano in southern Tuscany.

Carpineto is headed up by the engaging and enthusiastic Antonio Zaccheo, who manages several vineyard estates and olive groves around Tuscany. Sustainable viticulture and contemporary winemaking practices are used. Vinification takes place in stainless steel and the reds are generally aged in oak casks and barriques. Reflecting quintessential Toscano terroir, Carpineto wines have won numerous awards and are from the most prestigious Tuscan D.O.C.G. appellations.

Carpineto Spolverino I.G.T. RRP $17.99 Exclusive to Dan Murphy’s
‘Rooster one day, feather duster the next.’ The black rooster is the traditional symbol of the vinous heart of Tuscany where dry-farmed hillside vineyards lay amongst the picturesque cypress-studded countryside, but that centuries old tradition didn’t stop them from using screw caps. Full-bodied, intense and well-balanced with notes of red cherry, tobacco and violets it’s a fine accompaniment to antipasti and grilled meats. Packaged with a handy DropStop® (13.5% Alc./Vol.)
