Hartwell (Neal) Moore, a student at Florida State College in Jacksonville, became the first student to receive a pilot certificate at the new Sunrise Aviation satellite in Jacksonville, Florida.  Neal passed the FAA Practical Test for the Flight Instructor – Airplane Single Engine Certificate on November 10, 2011.  Richard Tillery was the FAA Designated Pilot Examiner who conducted the exam and issued the pilot certificate.  Neal used the Sunrise Aviation Piper Arrow for the flight test.  Neal’s flight instructor was Ralph Zahnle, who is also the Director of Operations at the Sunrise Aviation satellite in Jacksonville, Florida.

Sunrise Aviation has operated continuously since 1983.  They opened the satellite at Cecil Airport in Jacksonville, Florida on September 1, 2011.  Sunrise Aviation is now the flight training partner for Florida State College at Jacksonville.  Sunrise Aviation’s FSCJ satellite is approved by the FAA under Part 141 of the Federal Aviation Regulations and approved for veterans pilot training benefits including the Post 9/11 GI Bill.  As Florida State College at Jacksonville is a degree granting public institution, veterans are eligible for the best flight training benefits possible under the GI bill.  FSCJ also admits international students under the F-1 student visa program.

Sunrise Aviation now has Cessna 172s, Cessna 152s, a Piper Arrow and Piper Seminole available for students flying at Cecil Airport in Jacksonville, Florida.  The Cessna aircraft are equipped with Garmin GNS 430 GPS and the C172s have Horizontal Situation Indicators (HSI). Arriving next week at the Sunrise Aviation Jacksonville satellite is a brand new 2011 Piper Warrior (PA-28) with Garmin 500 glass cockpit avionics including two Garmin GNS 430 GPS/navcoms.  Many of the Sunrise Aviation aircraft with global position systems (GPS) are also certified for WAAS (wide area augmentation System) precision GPS approaches.

Sunrise Aviation’s main base of operations is at Ormond Beach, Florida where they base more than 40 aircraft and provide pilot training for international students from more than 50 countries.   Currently students from Brazil, Ecuador, India, Tunisia, United Kingdom, Uganda, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria, Sudan, and Belize are enrolled for flight training at the Ormond Beach base.  Most of the international students are enrolled in Sunrise Aviation's 250 flight hour Professional Pilot Course which results in the issuance of the FAA Commercial Pilot License with Multi-engine and Instrument Ratings. The Ormond Beach location is approved by US Homeland Security to enroll international students under the M-1 visa program.
