Pursue A Career As A Field Guide With A Nature Enthusiast Course

A nature enthusiast course is perfect for you and is the first steps to a career as a field guide. Field Guides interact with guests by providing visitors with an informative guided tour, on foot or vehicle, of locations such as game reserves, game farms and National Parks.

If you are employed but interested in nature, you can apply for a Nature training correspondence course. You will need to complete a Fgasa level 1 course which is usually a month long. After completing the Fgasa level 1 course you should be able to identify the major living and non-living features of the natural environment. you should also be able to interpret them at a level based on observation that the public to understand. The modules for the Fgasa level 1 include:

•   Creating a guided nature experience Geology
•   Astronomy
•   Weather and Climate
•   Basic Ecology
•   Basic Taxonomy
•   Introduction to the Biomes of Southern Africa
•   Botany and Grasse
•   Arthropod
•   Amphibian
•   Reptiles
•   Fish
•   Bird
•   Mammal
•   Conservation management and historical human habitation


You will learn everything there is to know about nature with a combination of fascinating lectures and exciting weekend field trips with access to many nature reserves. As a field guide you need to be willing to learn as much as possible because the knowledge available is virtually limitless. Confidence is key because you will need to communicate with visitors, so you need to speak with conviction assured by knowledge and experience. Tour guides are expected to be very customer service oriented and as a guide you must be able to constantly catch and keep the attention of the tour group.

Your certificate will be recognised by the field guides association of South Africa. This will allow you to work at any Game Reserve around the country. Learning the facts and history behind these tourist spots and mastering other languages can prove to be fun and enhance your career as well. Becoming a field guide is an incredible opportunity, so take it.
